We were going to have a night in Kathmandu in Nepal en route from Bhutan to Pokhara but due to the pollution there we thought we would head straight through, great decision!
Pokhara is so chilled out, you can understand why all the hippies used to come here from Kathmandu.
We stayed at the Fishtail lodge which is in the middle of Fewa Lake and you get taken over either by a row boat or a pontoon; if it’s good enough for Prince Charles, the Shah of Iran and Michael Palin, then it’s good enough for us.
There is a long road up the side of the lake, oddly enough called Lake Road where you can get anything you need without the hassle of Kathmandu. There were even camel rides and it was hilarious to see the camels chasing away the cows who just wander at will.
Paul got some ” good quality” fake Keen sandals which seem very comfortable and once the trekking is finished will be the mode of attire for the rest of the trip and they are waterproof!
There was a terrific thunderstorm in the evening which we opted to ride out in a bar and this cleared giving us the most stunning views of Fishtail or Macchapuchre mountain at breakfast – a wonderful way to start the day. The hotel may be stuck in a time warp, but the views make up for everything.
The following day we visited the Mountain Institute and the Gurkha museum, both very interesting. Tomorrow we’re off to Bandipur en route to Chitwan where we do our safari – watch this space!
