Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world, according to the United Nations, with 87 killings per 100,000, while San Pedro Sula is the world’s most murderous city which was confirmed to us by an American who’s friends father had been abducted, held to ransom and then murdered only a little while before we arrived. Getting lost is not normally a big deal but when you get lost in the country with the highest murder rate in the world that can get to be a little scary! So after a bumpy ride, our driver getting lost and driving through some areas that you’d rather not be in we finally arrived at the airport in San Pedro Sula (land of outlaws and kidnappers). When we were checking in we heard a cockerel crowing – it appeared as though the noise was coming from some luggage behind the check-in counter.  The pilot made an unscheduled stop to pick up extra passengers and you should have seen the look on their face as they boarded to the sound of a cockerel crowing.  We finally arrived in Roatan to find our transport to the resort had been and gone.  A short taxi ride and we were in a huge condo overlooking the ocean. There’s lots of places along the beach to eat and drink with good seafood so about 5 minutes after checking in we were sitting in one of them nursing a beer and a margarita while we watched the sun set.  Paul booked a dive for the first day and before they got to the dive site came across a pod of about 25 dolphins and got in for a swim with them, they were very relaxed and allowed people to get very close to them. What can we say about Roatan – every beach looks beautiful when its sunny but what you cannot see are the sand flies, to pass the time Lynn has been playing join the dots on Pauls body he has that many bites…

Below are selection of underwater pictures

And then of course there were the sharks…..

Videos from the diving which include, dolphins, turtles, the wreck of the Aguilla and last but not least sharks…
I haven’t taken the pic below but think its brilliant, not sure if it is all it seems or there has been some help from photoshop etc
Dolphins

The video below is of the first days diving in West Bay and includes the dolphins at the beginning.

After the first day the weather changed a bit and the next dives had to be on the Southside of the island:

This is the wreck of the Aguilla, a man made wreck that was sunk intact then split into 3 parts during a storm. We then saw a turtle on the reef.

This is the West Wall just off West Bay – well it would be wouldnt it….. There was also quite a few large groupers and a very friendly turtle.

This is diving with Caribbean Reef Sharks on the south side of the island.

From here we flew to Miami, picked up a Mustang Convertible and headed off down the Florida Keys
