NGORONGORO CRATER, Entamanu Ngorongoro

After the luxury of a lie in until 7 o’clock, it was a hour and a half flight up to Lake Manyara then a two and a half hour drive up to the crater and Entananu.

We had a stunning lodge overlooking the crater and no sooner had we arrived and started to get showered than a couple of giraffe decided to come and pay a visit.

The camp is discreetly nestled in a small forested area atop the crater rim and enjoys views both south towards the crater itself, and north-west towards the plains of the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge and the Gol Mountains – boasting that it’s the ‘only place in the world where you can watch the sun rise over the crater, and set over the Serengeti’.

After Ngorongoro it was a long trek home. Firstly it was a 3 hour drive to Lake Manyara, then a flight to Arusha where had an 8 hour wait.

We had a child lunch before a visit to a cultural centre then a little last minute retail therapy before heading to Kilimanjaro Airport for a 12 hour flight to Amsterdam via Dar es Salam only to find that KLM had kindly cancelled our flight and put us on a flight that meant a 9 hour wait. Schipol airport was a nightmare with it taking over 2 hours to get through security as due to industrial action there was only 2 out of 20 security conveyors waiting. On the announcement board there were 120 flights, only 6 were in green meaning that they were on schedule, around 80 were delayed with most of the rest cancelled. We managed to get on an earlier flight, just as well as the one they put us on got delayed again….
