Our first port of call in Costa Rica was San Jose.  We stayed in a beautiful finca/coffee plantation with lovely views over the Central Valley.  Finca Rosa Blanca is a really quirky place and our room was fabulous.  We did the coffee plantation tour so what we now don’t know about coffee we could write on the back of a postage stamp.

We then travelled to Tortuguero on the Caribbean side.  This part of the tour was all about the nature and wildlife.  We did a nature walk and wildlife viewing by boat  There’s a vast lagoon which runs parallel with the ocean and it’s a great place to see reptiles, birds and mammals.   The only downside was the mosquitos – have never experienced anything like it even during our travels in the Amazon!  The overwhelming scent in the air was Deet!! Oh yes mosquitos, where are our mosquito proof shirts when we need them – in the wardrobe in the house – you would think we would know better.  The first boat trip is at 5.00am, we decide on a lie in instead and it was a sound decision as it poured and there was nothing to see. Despite wanting a lie in we were woken by the howler monkeys at 5.30am – what a  noise. After a leisurely breakfast we took a rain forest walk and saw quite a few monkeys and sloths. Later in the day we took a boat trip and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing pace of it. There is a small village on the other side of the canal which we enjoyed looking round and getting the feel for local life.
We then headed to Arenal
