This is the area south of Sacramento which played host to the gold rush many years ago and is full of sleepy old pioneer towns.

Our first night in this area was on a park owned by the local casino which was well manicured to say the least. Everyone in the USA takes motorhomes very seriously to the point that one guy had his own aerial mast that was so tall he needed warning lights for approaching aircraft – see the pic!

We then headed south and took the advice of a local to visit the Calaveras Big Tree NP – good advice as it happened as we got to walk through the giant sequoias. This was something we were wanting to do but were struggling to fit the time in without doing a serious amount of miles each day.

After this we braved the forest fires in Yosemite
