We left Yosemite and headed east across the Tioga Pass which had only just re-opened following the forest fires. We stayed next to Mono Lake and awoke the next morning to discover that the Tioga Pass had been shut that very evening due to heavy snowfall – we were so lucky as this would have meant a 200 mile detour….

Our sat nav took us 8 miles along an un-made road very similar to what we did in a 4wd in Namibia – not much fun in a large RV, however it was worth the trip. Bodie State Park is literally a ghost town that was once a booming mining area with 10,000 people living there but the last person left in 1932. Due to the arid nature of the area it has generally been preserved although one harsh winter had 22 foot of snow……

 

After heading south through this area we headed into Death Valley
